Vet recommended dog food……..?
Jacki Asked:
Does your vet recommend a specific food for your dog and do you use it? My vet recommended Eukanuba and I never thought that was the best choice so we didn't listen. I wondered if maybe they maybe had to promote certain companies or something.
Reply:
My vet recommends Science Diet.
I do NOT use Science Diet, it's horrible food.
Vets are *NOT* nutritionalists. That is not what they are trained for. They are trained to be animal doctors; to diagnose illness and perform surgeries and such.
Vets get very little schooling in nutrition (and what they do get is usually written by Hills, the makers of Science Diet). They recommend the foods they've heard of the most, typically foods like Science Diet, Iams/Eukanuba, etc..
I suggest doing some research on your own to determine what dog food to buy. Here are some websites to start you off:

you’re right!
This is exactly WHY I became an Animal Naturopath rather than a vet! Even though I’ve spent 20 years studying – I feel it was worth every minute. Information like this just reminds WHY it was.
Science Diet is a junk dog food over run with fillers. And if you get the Light version there will be even more fillers to make the dog feel full while not adding any nutritional benefits. The best thing would be to get a food like Canidae that is an All-Life-Stage dog food and simply cut back on the amount you are feeding. To give your dog a lower calorie/lower fat diet, simply cut back on the amount of dog food you are feeding and do not give any treats (except things like carrots which don't have many calories or fat).
The Vet recommended Mimi start eating Senior dog food. Not sure why that makes me a tad sad.
It’s more than a little obvious that ginap42 works for one of the dog food manufacturers that is putting out some of the crud we are feeding our beloved pets.
Well you have a lot of suggestions, but personally, the higher quality you go, the more chance your dog will have of getting rid of the ear infection.
To start: vets and nutrition typically do not mix. Just look at the food in most vets offices(ingredients) sell. So far your vet seems honest, but I would still walk on the side of caution, I continue to do that even though my vet recommended a pet boutique where we found innova, but she could've told us the pro plan in her office.
You want to look for brown rice if you are going to feed a kibble with rice. Innova is a good example of a high quality dog food and I had success using it for a year or so until I switched my three to raw feeding.
If you can afford it, look into
Wellness core Ocean vaiety
Taste of the wild
Solid gold barking at the moon
Evo
Innova

Consuming the desired food is important for your health. You can try supplementing your diet with acai berry, it's not solely a widely tested and acknowledged weight loss compound, it's a superfood too. There is a risk free trial available at I have been using it for 3 weeks now and it is certainly working!!
