What type of dog food do you feed your dog?

I want to know what type of dog food your feed your dog(s).
Because someone on here told me what I feed my dog is crap, even though my vet reccommended it. She said that my vet of course would tell me to get a "bad" brand of dog food so it'll make my dog sick and I will have to keep bringing it in there so she'll make more money.
Who really believes this crap?!
If your vet recommended your dog to be on a certain dog food would you contest it?

My vet recommended Science Hills, but then I heard alot of bad things about it, we then did a little research and we changed the food to Nutro Max.

I used to feed my rottis Nutro, large breed, and every vet we spoke to told us it was terrific. We now have a peekingeese and he eats purina little bites indoor complete. With the recent scares about pet foods we have been cooking for our dog, at least I know for sure what he’s getting.
I feed Nutro. When you chose a dog food make sure it doesn’t have any animal bi-products and you should be fine. I would check with your vet to see if your breed requires any suppliments and if so what. This way you are maxing your dogs health without maxing your budget. My vet says Science Diet is crap dog food so I don’t use it. She recommends the Nutro, so I use it. I have heard that Science diet sells to vets for cheaper than pet stores so vets make a larger profit but I have no proof of that (a vet told me this). Good luck.
I’m glad you ask! My dog gets California Natural, Merrick and sometimes Solid Gold. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. What a lot of people don’t know is vets are not always up on what is quality dog foods. They often ‘push’ whatever the rep has bribed them to sell. Seriously.
I’d trust the vet, they are up-to-date on all of the recalls, and if you have a good vet, they have your dogs best interest at heart, and they want a good reputation. We use all of the vets prescription food and it has worked well. It may cost a little more, but it is better quality.
I feed Chicken Soup brand. (My vet recommended Science Diet, no way I’ll feed my dog that!)
A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit and kick-backs from the brands they keep on their shelves, that’s why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don’t focus a lot on nutrition. It’s not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told “this is good food”, so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it’s good as well.
Read the ingredients on the food you buy. Go with a high quality dog food. A grain should not be in the first couple ingredients ingredient (corn and such are mainly fillers, dogs don’t digest it well). Avoid foods that have a lot of “by products” listed.

Notice how the better food has more meats, less grain, and no by-products than the other brand? That’s where to start looking for what food is higher quality. Also be aware, just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it’s a good food.
Everyone has a food they think is the best, and perhaps it is FOR THEIR DOG. There is no one shoe fits all with dog foods. Not a bit different than there is no one diet that is perfect for all people. Some people are Hyper while others are Hypo, same with dogs.
A classic example is some dogs will have a loose stool on a chicken based diet while others won’t retain proper weight on a lamb based diet. So I feed both, either in combination or separately, depending on the individual dogs needs.
I feed the brand that I do because my dogs win in the ring when fed this diet. That doesn’t by any stretch of the imagination mean that it would be the proper diet for every dog out there.
my dogs are on the healthiet diet of all, the raw food and bones diet. they get rabbit or fish in the mornings usually and chicken wings at night along with any vegetables, meat scraps, gravey etc that my family didnt eat. i went with this diet because one of my dogs is alergic to things in a lot of dog foods (wheat, beef etc) and its worked out really well
Vets recommend certain foods that they carry in order to make a profit if you purchase there.
Vets are not “nutritionists.” And things have changed since many of them graduated vet school, so they may not be aware of the new findings and research on pet food.

They also have 2 non-allergic formulas which do not contain wheat or chicken for food sensitive and food allergic dogs.

I feed my dogs Purina one lamb and rice small bites. I also put one squart of vitacoat on it (Its for their dry skin). They really love it. I never gives chicken bones because they could choke on them.

The most important thing to look at is the ingredient list. The first ingredient should always be some type of meat (beef or chicken are most common).
If the first ingredient is Rice or Wheat than it probably doesn’t have enough protein to really be healthy for your dog.
Vets do not often recommend bad dog foods (at least good vets won’t) I have never heard of a vet intentionally trying to make dogs sick that way.
Dry food is also best since it is better for your dogs teeth. Soft food can get stuck in between the teeth and dogs don’t floss like we do

Well – the relationship between vets and the food they sell is a money-based one. Many vets, believe it or not, don’t know much about nutrition!

These sites have no relationships to any company. They will tell you about what the ingredients in your dog’s food are, and whether they are good or not good for your dog.
I feed Wysong kibble and I supplement it with plain yogurt or cottage cheese, and vegetables. I also give my dogs raw chicken wings or duck necks (NOT in combination with the kibble!!!) These foods digest differently and I don’t want my dogs to have stomach trouble. I do want them to have clean teeth and good health, which is why I follow the Dr. Pitcairn book. It’s taught me a lot about how to feed my dogs.
After talking with a lot of other dog owners, the owner of a pet bakery and our vet, I decided to feed our dogs Canidae. (Dry food and the canned for a “night time snack”)
I’ve tried other food.
Science Diet- Our dogs ate constantly on that.
Nutro- They didn’t seem to like it at all.
Pro Plan- They ate a ton of it and pooped constantly. It’s on the expensive side and just didn’t seem to be worth it.
We have fed our dogs the Canidae for a couple of years now and have had great results with it.
Yes, it is pricey ($33 for a 40 lb bag), but that bag lasts our three dogs two months, they poop less (and it’s solid, not runny), they have soft shiny coats and they maintain a good weight.

Having a dog with Colitis,it has been my experience that vets WILL and DO recommend foods that Reps are trying to “push”!! Twice my dog was put on foods totally unsuitable for his health problem!(different vets) I was also told to feed my dog chicken and rice,wrong!! He was worse!
So YES I did/Have contested it………..and I’m glad I did. He’s happier,healthier and only needs vet visits for routine issues. So quite honestly,its not cr*p!!!
My vet recommended Purina One Large Breed Formula for my neapolitan bullmastiff’s. I use it and I’m glad I do. My vet is not making a profit on what type of food I buy. I used a different kind for a few weeks (old yeller) and the dogs were gassy, bloated, and their coat became dull. When I made the switch back, all became good again.
Usually your vet recommends a certain brand for a good reason. If the food is to pricy, ask your vet about a cheaper alternative.
As long as your dogs are healthy, happy and fit, it shouldn’t matter to anyone else WHAT you feed your dog.
You bet I believe this “CRAP”. My vet recommends Eukanuba. There is no way in the world that I would feed my little girl that stuff. I actually go against what my vet says and feed RAW. When it comes to nutrition, I am not a big fan of veterinarians. I do not believe they know what is best. If they did, they would not recommend Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet, etc.
I don’t believe vets actually want you to feed low quality to increase what goes wrong with your dog so they will profit. I think they receive “kick-backs” from the manufacturer and that’s why they “recommend” a certain food.
If they didn’t recommend a certain food for kick-backs, and they knew more about pet nutrition, they would tell you what to look for in a food and send you on your merry way.
By the way, I am getting ready to switch to a holistic vet with a degree in nutrition to take care of my baby.
